What a lot of people don’t realize is what goes on behind the scenes in the music industry, atleast the legal side. Entertainment Lawyers deal with a mixture of labor laws, employment laws, contracts, intellectual property, litigation, and other legal disciplines as they relate to the entertainment industry
I was able to come into contact with entertainment lawyer Navarro Gray. Talking with Navarro, he revelead that he has worked with Big Boi of the Outkast, T.I. and renown producer Ty Fyffe. He also has negotiated contracts with LL Cool J, Bad Boy Entertainment, MTV, Vh1, F.U.E.N.T.S, Ru1 Records, universal music group and creates licensing opportunities for producers to have their music appear in television programs, video games, and films.
Exclusive Short Interview With Narravo Gray
Brick: If you had to give advice to new and upcoming rappers about the entertainment side of the music Industry, what would that Advice be?
Navarro Gray: My advice would be to consistently put out music content on social media, soundcloud, and YouTube. Music companies are constantly monitoring streams from soundcloud and views on YouTube. The more view and plays transform into potential earnings.
Brick: What separates you from other Lawyers that deal with helping various artists in the music industry?
Navarro Gray: I like to take a hands on approach with all of my clients. I like to think of myself as a mentor to them and advise them about all life situations, including music, overall business, finances, and personal issues.
Brick: What role do you play in a recording artists’ career?
Navarro Gray: I play a specific role in every stage in an artist’s career. When it comes to up and coming artists I assist them with establishing companies, finding placements for their music, trying to get them shows, and shopping their music to record labels and other companies. When an artist’s signs to a record label, my role is to negotiate the contract and have the terms most favorable to the artist. When the artist is established in their career, my role then shifts to looking at all legal documents, managing the legalities in those documents/contracts and making sure the artist is protected.
Brick: Who is the biggest client your working with right now?
Navarro Gray: Every client is significant to me, however right now it is Fetty Wap and Cissy Houston (Whitney Houston’s Mother)
Brick: Why should any artist have an entertainment lawyer?
Navarro Gray: An artist should want to concentrate on his/her craft. The business side to the music industry contains various subject matters that one must learn and be educated about in order to make knowledgeable decisions. It would be very difficult for an artist to be successful in his/her career as an artist and learn the legal aspect of the music industry at the same time.
